Artist's Comments

Saturday morning (04 October) I was looking out the back door at the hummingbird feeder ready to go out and shoot when I noticed some strange shadows on the edge of the roof. So I went out the front door and looked back at the house and there were 35 black vultures taking in the morning sun on my roof!! It was rather unsettling. For a minute I thought I was in the "Addams Family" or something!! I took a few pictures but they didn't seem interested in posing and all flew away over to my neighbor's yard where they sat in a dead tree for a few minutes. Then they all took to the sky and soared on the thermals and out of sight.

So, for the completely opposite end of the spectrum from the hummingbirds, here are a few of our breakfast guests ... no, there wasn't anything (dead) for them to eat on my roof or in my yard!!!

For the full impact you might look at this in "Download." I counted 35, but could not see if there were more on the other side of the roof!!!

...and it was always said of him, that he knew how to keep Christmas well, if any man alive possessed the knowledge. May that be truly said of us, and all of us! And so, as Tiny Tim observed, God Bless Us, Every One!

It was incredible! I was just glad they were shy and preferred to be in the air!!

I counted 33 in this picture, but wow, that would be a bit unnerving seeing that many vultures in one place. I mean, it's a bit odd/creepy enough seeing a couple flying over you during gym class when you're running laps outside(maybe they were waiting for us to drop).

I had to crop the picture to the right -- there were 3 more on the porch roof!! This flock roosts in an area about half a mile around my house so if they aren't on my street they will be across the highway, or in the housing development at the next corner!
Yes it is a bit creepy -- but at least they aren't turkey vultures! Just don't lie down on the track and take a nap!!!
